Mixed operations guide: choosing the right operation
How to help children choose the right operation when the problem mixes everything.
What is mixed practice?
Mixed practice is a brain workout that mixes addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in a single round. Instead of knowing the operation ahead of time, children must figure out which one a question needs.
This is where real fluency is built. Recognizing the right operation quickly is exactly the skill children use on tests, in word problems, and in everyday life.
How mixed practice works
- Read the question carefully before doing anything.
- Look for clue words: "in all" and "together" mean add; "left" or "how many more" mean subtract; "groups of" means multiply; "shared equally" means divide.
- Pick the right tool from the other guides: counting on for adding, fact families for subtracting and dividing, skip counting for multiplying.
- With practice, choosing the operation becomes automatic, and speed follows accuracy.
Worked examples
There are 5 blue birds and 6 red birds. How many in all?
- "In all" tells us to add.
- 5 + 6 = 11.
- There are 11 birds in all.
9 apples are on the table. 4 are eaten. How many are left?
- "Left" tells us to subtract.
- 9 - 4 = 5.
- 5 apples are left.
There are 3 boxes with 5 toys in each. How many toys in total?
- Equal groups of toys tell us to multiply.
- 3 × 5 = 15.
- There are 15 toys in total.
16 stickers are shared equally among 4 friends. How many each?
- "Shared equally" tells us to divide.
- 16 ÷ 4 = 4 (because 4 × 4 = 16).
- Each friend gets 4 stickers.
Tips for parents and teachers
- Only introduce mixed practice after your child is comfortable with each operation on its own.
- Ask your child to say out loud which operation they will use and why, before answering.
- Use real word problems: cooking, shopping and games all produce natural mixed practice.
- Keep it playful. A mixed round is a challenge, and the streak counter makes it a game.

A learning sequence for mixed practice
Mixed practice is where facts become automatic. A practical order:
- Ages 6–7: mixed addition and subtraction within 10, so children learn to recognise both signs without help.
- Ages 7–8: mixed facts within 20, moving between +, − and simple × problems in one session.
- Ages 8–9: mixed tables and division facts, so a child cannot rely on the pattern of one table at a time.
- Ages 10–12: mixed two-digit calculations and word problems that require choosing the operation from the story, not from the heading.
Five-minute warm-up: Operation Detective
Read a word problem aloud, giving only the numbers and the question. The child must choose the operation and justify it: “combining” means add, “taking away” means subtract, “equal groups” means multiply, “sharing” means divide. Award a point for each correct operation and reason. This builds the single skill that makes word problems solvable.
