What number sense actually looks like

A child with good number sense does not just memorise answers. They can:

  • Look at 7 + 8 and see 15 quickly, but also notice that 7 + 7 = 14, so 7 + 8 is one more.
  • Estimate whether 98 × 3 is closer to 300 or 900 before calculating.
  • Break a number apart: 48 is 40 + 8, or 4 tens and 8 ones, or 50 − 2.
  • Compare quantities without counting everything.
  • Explain why 6 + 4 = 10, not just that it does.

Why it matters more than memorisation

Five ways to build number sense at home

  1. Count everything, and count differently. Count stairs, forks, buttons. Count in twos, fives and tens. Ask, "What if we counted backwards?"
  2. Talk about "how many?" and "how much more?" Ask your child to compare amounts around the house: "Which pile has more? How many more?"
  3. Play with ten. Ten frames and ten-finger maths are the foundation of place value. Ask, "How many more to make ten?"
  4. Estimate before you calculate. "Roughly how many sweets are in the jar?" Then count to check. Estimation builds flexible thinking.
  5. Ask for the "other way". Whenever your child finds an answer, ask, "Can you show me another way to get there?"
