Division guide: how it works and how to teach it
A practical teaching guide for parents and teachers.
What is division?
Division is sharing or grouping. "20 ÷ 5 = ?" asks either "share 20 equally among 5, how much each?" or "how many 5s fit inside 20?". The ÷ sign means "split into equal parts".
Division is the reverse of multiplication. Since 5 × 4 = 20, we know 20 ÷ 5 = 4. Strong times tables are the best division tool your child can have.
How division works
- Sharing model: hand out 12 cookies to 3 children one at a time — each gets 4.
- Grouping model: put 20 counters into piles of 5 — you can make 4 piles.
- Reverse multiplication: "12 ÷ 3 = ?" means "3 times what equals 12?" — and 3 × 4 = 12.
- Remainders: when things do not split evenly, the amount left over is called the remainder (e.g., 13 ÷ 4 = 3 with 1 left over).
Worked examples
12 ÷ 3 = ?
- Share 12 objects into 3 equal groups.
- Each group gets 4 objects.
- Check: 3 × 4 = 12, so 12 ÷ 3 = 4.
20 ÷ 4 = ?
- Ask: "How many 4s fit inside 20?"
- Count by 4s: 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 — that is 5 groups.
- 20 ÷ 4 = 5.
18 ÷ 6 = ?
- Use the related multiplication fact: 6 × ? = 18.
- 6 × 3 = 18.
- 18 ÷ 6 = 3.
24 ÷ 8 = ?
- Think of the fact family: 8 × 3 = 24.
- Division undoes multiplication, so 24 ÷ 8 = 3.
- Check by multiplying: 8 × 3 = 24. Correct!
Tips for parents and teachers
- Begin with real sharing: snacks, coins, or counters make division concrete and fair.
- Always practice division together with its multiplication fact. The two reinforce each other.
- Let children draw pictures and use skip counting before moving to written long division.
- Expect remainders later. The game starts with exact division so children can build confidence first.
Frequently asked questions
What is a remainder?
A remainder is what is left over when a number cannot be split evenly. For example, 13 ÷ 4 is 3 groups of 4 with 1 left over, so the remainder is 1.
Why should my child learn division through multiplication?
Because it is much faster. If a child knows 7 × 6 = 42, then 42 ÷ 6 = 7 is instantly available. Division and multiplication are two sides of the same coin.
What is the difference between sharing and grouping?
Sharing asks "how many does each group get?", grouping asks "how many groups can I make?". Both are division, and using both builds a complete understanding.
Is it okay if my child draws pictures to divide?
Absolutely. Drawing is how many children make sense of division. It is a strategy, not a crutch, and it supports written division later.
A learning sequence for division
A practical order for teaching division, age by age:
- Ages 6–7: sharing equally with real objects (6 sweets between 2 children) and grouping (how many 3s are in 12).
- Ages 7–8: division as the opposite of multiplication, using the 2, 5 and 10 tables to find quotients.
- Ages 8–9: division facts within the times tables, including remainders, and dividing two-digit numbers by a single digit.
- Ages 10–12: long division with remainders and decimals, and deciding whether a remainder should round up or down in a real problem.
