Addition guide: how it works and how to teach it

A practical teaching guide for parents and teachers.

What is addition?

Addition is the first math operation most children meet. It means putting two or more groups together and finding out how many there are all together. The plus sign (+) tells us to join groups together.

When your child practices addition, they build number sense they will use for the rest of their life: counting money, measuring, sharing, and every other math operation they meet later.

How addition works

  • Joining: 4 + 3 means start with 4 things and add 3 more, so you have 7 in total.
  • Counting on: instead of counting everything from 1, start at 4 and count three more: 5, 6, 7.
  • Making ten: pairs like 8 + 5 become easier by thinking 8 + 2 = 10, then 10 + 3 = 13.
  • Place value: for bigger numbers, add the ones first, then the tens. When the ones add to 10 or more we regroup (carry) one ten over.

Worked examples

  1. 4 + 3 = ?

    1. Start with 4.
    2. Count on three more: 5, 6, 7.
    3. 4 + 3 = 7.
  2. 8 + 5 = ?

    1. Make a ten first: 8 + 2 = 10.
    2. We used 2 of the 5, so 3 are left: 10 + 3.
    3. 8 + 5 = 13.
  3. 27 + 5 = ?

    1. Add the ones first: 7 + 5 = 12.
    2. 12 is 1 ten and 2 ones, so we regroup.
    3. Add the tens: 2 tens + 1 regrouped ten = 3 tens.
    4. 27 + 5 = 32.
  4. 36 + 48 = ?

    1. Ones: 6 + 8 = 14. Write 4, regroup the 1 ten.
    2. Tens: 3 + 4 = 7, plus the regrouped 1 = 8 tens.
    3. 36 + 48 = 84.

Tips for parents and teachers

  • Start with real objects: counters, buttons, crackers, or fingers. Concrete first, then symbols.
  • Practice counting on, not counting everything from 1. It is much faster and builds number sense.
  • Play in short bursts: five focused minutes beats thirty unfocused ones for young children.
  • Praise effort and strategy, not just right answers. Ask, "How did you figure that out?"

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay if my child counts on their fingers?

Yes. Fingers are a natural first tool and a sign your child understands the idea of combining amounts. Fingers gradually disappear as facts become automatic.

When should my child know basic addition facts?

Most children master single-digit addition facts (up to 9 + 9) during grades 1 and 2. Mastery means answering without counting every time.

How can I help with carrying and regrouping?

Use base-10 blocks or loose change. Physically trading 10 ones for one ten shows your child why regrouping works before they ever do it on paper.

How often should we practice?

A short daily session is ideal. The game keeps score and streaks automatically so you can simply repeat it a few times a week.

A learning sequence for addition

A practical order for teaching addition, age by age:

  • Ages 6–7: adding amounts up to 10 with real objects, then counting on from the larger number (5 + 3 means starting at 5 and counting on).
  • Ages 7–8: doubles and near-doubles (6 + 6, then 6 + 7), making ten with single digits, and the 0–10 addition facts.
  • Ages 8–9: adding two-digit numbers with regrouping (carrying), and adding three numbers by choosing pairs that make ten.
  • Ages 10–12: adding larger numbers in columns, adding decimals with the same place value, and estimating sums before calculating.

Five-minute warm-up: Ten-Card Snap

You need a set of number cards 0–9. Deal two cards; the child says how many more are needed to make ten. Two cards that already make ten (say 3 and 7) are “snapped” and collected. The player who collects the most tens wins. This game builds the making-ten fact family that makes single-digit addition automatic.
