Money math: teaching children to count coins, give change and budget
Money is the most motivating math material in the world, because children already know they want it. Teaching math with coins and notes does double duty: it builds genuine arithmetic while it teaches a life skill. And unlike worksheets, money math has a built-in check — getting it wrong costs you real things.
The skills money naturally teaches
- Coin recognition and values: naming coins and knowing their worth is early place value with a smile on it.
- Counting on: counting 5p, 10p, 20p coins is skip-counting wearing a costume.
- Addition and subtraction: "you have £2, this costs £1.35 — what is left?"
- Multiplication: "three of these at 40p each — how much?"
- Division and remainders: sharing a £5 note between three children, honestly.
- Decimals: prices in pounds and pence are decimals with a real-world meaning.
A gentle sequence for ages 6 to 12
- Ages 6–7: recognise coins, sort them, count piles of the same coin, play shop with whole pounds.
- Ages 7–8: make amounts in different ways (two ways to make 20p), give change from whole pounds.
- Ages 8–9: add and subtract amounts, work with pence and pounds together, estimate a shopping total.
- Ages 9–10: multiply amounts, compare best buys, work out change from notes, start simple budgeting.
- Ages 10–12: percentages ("20% off"), ratios ("3 for 2"), currency conversion and savings interest.
Play shop at home
Set up a shop with real or play money, price the toys, and let your child be shopkeeper or customer. Rotate roles so they practise both giving and receiving change. Add a receipt ("£4.50, you gave £5, change is…") and you have built-in subtraction practice every single time. Most children will happily play this for an hour without noticing they are doing maths.
Give them real pocket-money decisions
Nothing teaches budgeting like a small allowance with real choices. "You have £3. That game costs £4. How many weeks of saving?" and "You can buy one thing today or save for two weeks and get a bigger one" are lessons in addition, comparison and patience that no worksheet can match.
Watch for the decimal stumble
The classic error is treating 1.4 as "fourteen pence". When it happens, go back to real coins: £1.40 is one pound and four 10p coins. Money errors are the friendliest way in the world to correct place value mistakes, because the answer has to make sense for the purchase to work.
