Estimation for kids: the skill that catches silly answers
Estimation is the most underrated math skill in the whole curriculum. It makes numbers make sense, catches ridiculous answers, and is the single best antidote to "I finished" followed by an answer that could not possibly be right. Best of all, it needs no worksheets — just a willingness to guess out loud and then check.
Why estimation matters more than it looks
Estimation is not "being sloppy". It is the ability to work with approximate quantities quickly — to know that 97 × 3 is "about 300", not 2900. Children who can estimate:
- notice unreasonable answers (a calculator slip says "1,000" for 32 × 29; an estimator knows it should be about 900);
- make faster progress, because they can check their own work;
- use math in real life, where precise answers are often unnecessary and "roughly how many?" is the actual question;
- build the flexible number sense that underpins all higher math.
Teach it with three moves
- Round first. 48 × 3 → "about 50 × 3 = 150". Teach rounding to friendly numbers (10, 20, 25, 50, 100).
- Compensate. Rounding changed the answer, so nudge it. "48 × 3 is a little less than 150, so about 144."
- Check the scale. After any estimate, ask "does that match the situation?" — a sandwich cannot cost £1,400, and 3 kg of flour will not make 80 cakes.
Estimation games for the car and kitchen
- Jar guessing: estimate the sweets, then count to check. Keep a family scoreboard of closest guesses.
- Shopping total: round each item, add as you go, compare with the till total. The closest estimate wins no prize — just glory.
- Time estimation: "how long until the toast pops? the kettle boils? the journey ends?" Then check the clock.
- Distance and height: "roughly how many steps to the park? how tall is the tree, in children?"
- How many fit: "how many books fit on this shelf? how many spoons in the drawer?" Check by counting.
The check-your-answer habit
Teach one golden rule: estimate before you calculate, check after. Before answering a problem, ask "about what?" — one quick estimate. After calculating, ask "is this near my estimate?" This single habit eliminates most careless errors forever, because an unreasonable answer is caught immediately instead of being handed in with confidence.
